I wanted to let you know what a monumental experience Sustainable Summer was for Serena three years ago. I teach school, so I know that formative experiences can become increasingly important as one moves past them and can look back on the whole life trajectory. This year Serena has been applying for college and she has been applying to study the field of environmental science. As she has been writing essays explaining this choice, it is clear what a pivotal role Sustainable Summer played for her. After that summer, she increased her course load in the sciences and in foreign languages; she even looked for (and served) an internship in solar energy. We live in a small community in a poor state. Her peers have not done the kinds of things that Serena did that summer with you and they do not have the same kind of vision of what might be possible. You gave her something very special on the trip to Ecuador.
