A Look Back At The Week

Here we are on Sunday. It has been one week since students from all across the globe gathered at Dartmouth to learn about sustainability. Much fun has been had. I dare say that we learned a few things along the way, too.

We kicked off the program with a scavenger hunt around campus.

We learned about cap and trade through a competitive simulation where team’s own a power plant that must reduce emissions and can expend capital to improve efficiency, invest in renewables, or trade for additional emission allowances. Here is the winning team.

We canoed on the Connecticut River…

…to a little island in the river with a fun rope swing.

We researched and presented on social ventures…

…including the creation of some advertisements for the ventures, such as this one…

We visited the greenhouse on top of the Life Sciences Center, a LEED platinum certified building.

We learned to identify tree species and calculate the carbon stored in them…

… and also learned about many other topics, such as the history of international political action on climate and the environment; water treatment; life cycle analysis; guerrilla gardening and more in our Saturday morning small group workshops. The weekend has also included an afternoon at Storrs Pond and hiking on the Appalachian Trail. More to come next week!
