First Post for Seeds of Change 2017
Hola a todos!
We’ve made it to Ecuador and it’s been a fun filled and busy first couple days. We’re staying in Tababela, a small town nestled into the valley of the Andes mountains. Our hostal has the most beautiful garden where we’ve been doing bonding activities and getting ready for the trip. On Tuesday we went into the historic center of Quito for a background of Andean culture and our first experience at a local market. So far we’ve tasted chirimoya, guava, granadilla, guanábana and tree tomato. So many delicious tropical fruits!
Today (Wednesday) included learning about the Red de Guardianes de Semillas (seed saver’s network) work preserving heirloom and other important seed varieties, visiting a friend’s garden, and exploring and observing plant families. Did you know chard and quinoa come from the same family? And every one sunflower actually has 1000 flowers inside of it? Here we are exploring all parts of plants, and enjoying the beauty of nature.
This looks exciting! I’m happy that the young people have an opportunity to be introduced to new cultural experiences coupled with rich academic exposure. Have a wonderful time to my special student, Alissa.
