Sustainable Learning To Host Fundraiser June 2nd

Proceeds Will Support Student Scholarship Initiative

Brooklyn, NY, May 30th, 2013 – Sustainable Learning, an environmental education not-for-profit based in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, will be holding its first annual fundraiser on Sunday June 2nd at Atlantic Terrace. The event, which aims to raise  funds for the organization’s student scholarship initiative, has drawn the support of many local businesses.

Sustainable Learning specializes in experience-based environmental education programs for teenagers. The organization’s flagship program is Sustainable Summer, an environmental study abroad program for high school students. The program provides teens from across the US with an immersion experience that combines outdoor adventure, leadership development, and environmental education. This summer, two groups of about 15 students each, plus 3 adult trip leaders, will travel to the South American country Ecuador to study concepts such as organic farming and sustainable development. Sustainable Learning provides scholarships to students requiring financial support to participate. In 2013, over $16,000 in financial aid was awarded to Sustainable Summer scholarship participants, primarily from the NYC metro area.

“Education is a valuable investment,” said Anne Fenton, Sustainable Learning’s co-founder and the board member heading up the fundraising event. “We believe deeply in the transformative capacity of our programs and are committed to providing financial assistance to families that need it. It’s reassuring to receive the support of so many local businesses who have gotten behind our mission.”

Supporting sponsors of the event include many local food purveyors with a sustainability focus, such as Mast Brothers Chocolate, which imports cacao from a small farm in the Dominican Republic via wind power, or Runa, which imports Guayusa tea leaves from the Ecuadorian Amazon. Sustainable Summer participants visit Runa’s Ecuador operations and learn about the company’s efforts to use business to create sustainable livelihoods for indigenous farmers.

Other supporting sponsors include Floyd Eats, Brooklyn Brewshop, Loca Linda wines, Roots in Rust, iSi, Lulu & Po, Manhattan Proper, Habana Outpost, Brooklyn Brewery, Greenhouse Eco-Cleaning, Method cleaning products, Daria de Koning jewelry, Bitter & Esters, Sunny Bang’s probiotic hot sauce, Edible Brooklyn, Bark Hot Dogs, and Latis imports.

The fundraising event will take place at Atlantic Terrace, 212 South Oxford St, Brooklyn, NY on Sunday June 2nd from 3pm to 6pm.The event will include live music, food, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages, raffle prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are available online for a suggested donation of $20.
